What I needed
This typewriter was just what I needed. It types very well and came with extra ribbons. I purchased it in red and so beautiful to look at as well. It is well built, and also has the automatic spacing bar that my old typewriter didn't have. I like the way it was packaged to prevent any damage upon delivery too. If anyone is having problems with the ribbon when typing, just make sure the color switch on the right side is on the correct setting. It's worth the money spent. I have to give it 5 plus stars and would give more if it had a higher rating scale.

Don't take your chances
I read all of the poor reviews and still decided to purchase any as a Christmas gift for my 9-year-old son who really wanted an old-fashioned typewriter, mainly because there aren't many options out there and I felt like I should be able to trust what I thought was a reputable brand name. The ink that came installed was dried up like I had read, but I bought extra and the unopened one that came with it was fine. The problem was not that, but that the ink ribbon constantly bunches up while you're typing- like you can't type more than one sentence without it happening. Also, one of the paper advance knows fell off and there's no getting it back on. It types really light near the left margin and then darker as you move to the right. This was all within not even a day of use, mostly by me trying to get it to work properly. I'm returning it and not even going to bother asking for a replacement. You're better off keeping your eyes open at a flea market, garage sale, or estate sale for a true vintage one because this is junk. You can buy a brand new cheap laptop for the same price.

A decent show-piece, but as a true typing machine it falls short.
I really wanted to like this typewriter, and I commend Royal for trying to build a quality product, but the quality of the manufacturing really shows here. The cast aluminum body is of solid quality, the keys themselves are a very nice heavy resin, even the platen mechanism seems to be well made aside from the cheap-feeling plastic end-caps. The typewriter had significant key sticking issues out of the box that were solved with some lubrication and filing of the rough castings on the ends of the key levers. Other than that it WOULD be a fantastic typing machine , if it weren’t for these spacing errors that show up in seemingly random places. Basically this typewriter is great if you want to be a typewriter service technician, if you just want to type get a daisy wheel electric. See photos for more in-depth review.

Be aware of the Font Size
I bought this as a fun way to take my writing 'offline'. Reminds me of my typing class days in high school. Perfect for someone who is learning how to type. As with all manual typewriters, you have to press the keys with more confidence than a computer keyboard to make sure the hammer strikes the page hard enough to leave the ink impression. It took me a little time to adjust to the return arm; it hangs low and if you don't keep it raised up on return of a line it will hit the top of the case. Just something you'll quickly adjust to.

Good enough for the price.
This machine works good enough for draft documents and the price is reasonable. If you need to create high quality finnished documents then be prepared to pay 5x the price for a pre 1980's machine. The CAPs tend to imprint a little too high, but that is part of the charm of manual typewriters. The only other issue was the trim on the top cover was loose but a few drops of super glue fixed the problem.

great valaue for the money
I looked at site after site to find a dependable AND affordable typewriter for my son. the Royal 79120q Classic Manual Typewriter fit the bill. Everything worked right out of the box and he still uses it daily with no problems. And it's a fiery red color to boot!! So far-so good.

Was great for two weeks— then fell apart
This thing was amazing for about two weeks. Then the paper feeder stopped working, then then bridge that holds the ribbon fell out of place and was too far away for the keys to hit the paper… super disappointing. Was really hopeful the reviews weren’t right but seems to be very poorly made if it only lasts two weeks before just like totally falling apart

Do not buy
Horrible product. Instructions are not clear and there is no actual support. The trouble shooting is not helpful at all. It’s a large product and not worth the money at all. You’re better off buying a vintage one that will actually work. It’s aesthetically pleasing but beyond that, just a useless piece of metal. I am pretty sure the only useful thing about this is that it could be dropped from a 10 story building and not be damaged.

A beautiful, functional machine
The red typewriter is beautiful and types very well too. The look and feel and weight are great! Delivery is also very fast.

Plastic roller not rubber so will not grip paper properly.

Does not work properly.
The keys have to be hit very hard to bring up a letter or number. Where do i take the typewriter to get it fixed? Replacement Typewriter received tracking id TBAUO1819629. Will set it up later.

Yes read the reviews but still bought it !
Well, I found the need for a typewriter and was going to buy a second hand unit however, came across The Royal On Amazon. I dismissed the unit on reading a number of negative views about this item but, decided to take a chance and I bought it. On arrival I found it packed very good and on inspection found the unit to be good condition. I noted straight away that the ribbon had dried out and I could barely see the type letter.... I immediately went on a search for a new ribbon after trying to contact Amazon which, is probably easier to walk on water than find an avenue to vent my concerns. Amazon need to have a seperate contact area where someone can ask a simple question rather than ....DO YOU WANT TO RETURN THIS ITEM ? No I simple want a replacement ribbon 😡 Anyway, having bought a new ribbon, the machine does sort of work! But not an even printout when you tend to get light / shade in the finished printed page. Some of the keys feel a little flimsy! Note built to be a solid type! The unit will probably do its job for me as I don’t intend to write books or use the machine much at all. Having owned typewriters back in the 60’70’s it’s not a Remington or Olympic... but priced ok....💰
