Description Orbax (orbifloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in the treatment of diseases in dogs and cats associated with bacteria susceptible to orbifloxacin. It comes in a tablet form, which means it's easy to feed to your pet. Simply feed it like a treat, disguise it in a pill pocket or hide it in normal meals. It's also available in an oral liquid. Uses Orbax (orbifloxacin) is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections (cystitis) in dogs. This medication is also indicated for skin and soft tissue infections (wounds and abscesses) in dogs and cats. Possible Side Effects Please contact your veterinarian if the following adverse reactions occur: loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Drug & Food Interactions Orbifloxacin and other antibiotics have been shown to cause joint disease in young pets of most species tested, the dog being particularly sensitive to this side effect. Orbifloxacin is contraindicated in young pets during the rapid growth phase (between two and eight months of age in small and medium-sized breeds, and up to 18 months of age in large and giant breeds). Orbifloxacin is contraindicated in pets known to be hypersensitive to antibiotics. Precautions The use of this medication in pets has been reported to adversely affect the retina. Such products should be used with caution in pets. Blindness has also been reported. In some cases, blindness has been temporary. This medication should be used with caution in pets with known or suspected central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Treatment of skin and associated soft tissue infections should continue for two (2) to three (3) days beyond the cessation of clinical signs. Treatment of urinary cystitis should be for at least ten (10) consecutive days with diagnosis and treatment re-evaluation if improvement is not seen within the first five (5) days.
